Indianapolis Beer Sign

Here is an early Indianapolis Beer Porcelain Sign from the Indianapolis Brewing Company located in Indianapolis, IL.  This pre-prohibition era Indianapolis Beer Porcelain Sign is from the late 1800s era and is in excellent condition for its age.

The sign was made by the National Enameling Company located in Cincinnati, OH.  It’s approximately 18″ wide and made of porcelain enamel over steel. On the back of the sign there is a small remnant of the paper label for National Enameling Company.

The graphics on this sign depict a nude woman sitting on a Winged Wheel with the typography reading “Indianapolis Brewing Company Beer” and the tagline “The World’s Standard of Perfection”.  The “Winged Wheel” is a symbol used historically on monuments by the ancient Greeks and Romans and signifies motion, progress, and speed.  Signs like this one would have hung outside of a tavern hotel, or distributor to advertise Indianapolis Beer to patrons passing by.
