Here is a Reading Premium Beer Thermometer from the Reading Brewing Company located in Reading, PA. This Reading Premium Beer Thermometer is in excellent condition for it’s age and still works like a charm for telling the temperature. This Reading Premium Beer Thermometer sign is considered a TOC also known as a Tin-Over-Cardboard sign.
The “Get Friendly” and “Get Modern” tagline on this sign is in reference to the main tagline that the Reading brewery used in the 1960’s till the mid 1970’s. Their main tagline was “Friendly Beer for Modern People”; it was part of the push from the brewery’s marketing department to make the beer advertising a little more hip and up-to-date. Pre-1960’s era the brewery marketed around the old PA Dutch styles even incorporating a PA Dutch mascot by the name of Old Gus. Old Gus was the spokesman for the Old Reading Brewing Company prior to the rebrand of the brewery to the Reading Brewing Company that came around in the 1960’s era.
This Reading Premium Beer Thermometer is one of 5 variations of thermometers that the brewery produced. The variations are two diamond snapped ones (like this one), two Round ones, and a larger square one. There is another diamond snapped variation that’s colored teal and promotes one of the brewery’s flagship beers called PR8 also known as Pale Reserve Beer in 8oz Bottles. Same with the round variation as one promotes Reading Premium while the other promote Pale Reserve Beer. And the larger square one promotes Pale Reserve as well. I have almost every variation in my collection with the exception of the diamond shaped teal Pale Reserve Thermometer.
