This is a Mt Carbon Beer Desktop Thermometer I recently picked up. This desktop thermometer was made for the Mt Carbon Brewery located in Pottsville, PA. The brewery ran from 1845 to 1976 under various owners and names. Their Motto was “A Mellow Brew from the Mountains”. Production ceased in 1976 and brand licensing was sold to D. G. Yuengling (another brewery in the Pottsville, Pa area and currently oldest brewery in America). This thermometer was made to advertise the brewery’s flagship beer called “Bavarian Type Beer” which was brewed from 1941 until 1977 when the Yuengling brewery purchased the brand and brewery.
The brewery used the old dutchman graphic on a variety of advertising items like trays, thermometers, labels, coasters, and signs. The Mount Carbon Brewery also had another variation of thermometer in the form of a small round hanging version made of plastic with the old dutchman’s face on it. The thermometer is rather small in size at around which leads me to believe these may have been distributed to the public to advertise the brewery’s Bavarian Beer. It is made out of a clear plastic face with a metal back. The thermometer is in good condition for it’s age with minor scuffs on the face.
It’s a very nice piece and I am happy to add it to my collection.
