The Lehman & Bolton was established in 1873 by William H. Lehman and Mahlon Bolton, Jr. located in Philadelphia, PA. Lehman & Bolton was a printer of lithographic and letterpress advertising signs and maps. The firm, formerly Jacob Haehnlen’s establishment at Goldsmiths Hall, specialized in commercial lithographs such as billheads, letterheads, and advertisements; they also produced genre scenes and commemorative prints.
In 1886, the “Sennefelder” union lithograph printers in their employ and other large establishments, including Geo. S. Harris & Sons, Ketterlinus Printing House, Thomas Sinclair & Son, Wells & Hope Company, and Hofstetter’s went on strike to reduce the workweek from 54 1/2 to 53 hours. Newspaper reports indicated a few firms conceded immediately, but the effect on Lehman and Bolton was unrecorded.
At the time, they also had competition from other local lithography companies including Avil Printing and Lithograph Company and Wells & Hope Company both companies located in the Philadelphia, PA area.
They produced lithographs for breweries and bottle companies including D. G. Yuengling, Eagle Brewing Company, Lauer Brewing Company, Deppen Brewing Company, Rettig Brewing Company, and Herman Floto Bottling just to name a few.
Around 1890 Lehman & Bolton relocated to 525 Arch Street, which the firm tenanted for thirty years. The company ceased operation in 1920, but officially closed in 1945.
