The Avil Printing and Lithograph Company was established by John D. Avil in 1876 located in Philadelphia, PA. Avil Printing was one of the largest makers of printed publications, lithographs and bindery on the east coast. They made a huge name for themselves for the printing of highly detailed and colorful lithographs for both books as well as general advertising for various companies and industries across the count
They also employeed a large working staff that included lithographers, book binders, and letterpress printers. Among one of the most famous lithographers was A.M.J. Mueller who was one of the finest artist of lithography at the time. Avil Printing and Lithograph Company later changed it’s name to Avil Publishing Company in part due to the many contracts they had in the publishing and publication industry.
Various breweries took a liking to what Avil Printing & Litho Co. was producing at the time and hired them to produce lithographs and signs to promote their brewery and products. Breweries like Reading Standard, Deppen, Lauer, Barbey’s Inc., Kaier, D. G. Yuengling, Peter Schemm & Son, Weisbrod & Hess, Bergner & Engel, and F. A. Poth just to name a few.
In November of 1903, a large fire broke out in one of the printing rooms which speed rapidly, eventually destroying the entire building. This caused Avil Printing Company to close its doors for good.
